Русский музейWhile visit to the Russian Museum you will see collection of Old Russian icons, paintings and sculptures of famous Russian artists of 18th – 19 th centuries, avant-garde masterpieces of 20 th century.   

The Russian Museum was the first state museum of Russian fine art in our country. The Museum was found in 1895 by decree of Tsar Nicholas II and was open for public in 1898. From the very beginning the collection was housed in the Mikhailovsky Palace, which was built for the Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich, son of Paul I. Originally the Museum has less than 1500 items mainly from the collection of the Hermitage, the Museum of the Academy of Arts and from the Royal Palaces.

The State Russian MuseumThe State Russian MuseumNowadays the collection of the Russian Museum numbers circa 400 000 works including Old Russian icons, works of painting, graphic art and sculpture, decorative and applied art, folk art and numismatics, and avant-garde masterpieces as well.  Icons by Andrei Rublev and Simon Ushakov, portraits by Levitsky and Kiprensky, landscapes by Savrasov, the Itinerants Shishkin, Vasnetsov, Repin all are heritage of Russian art. Well-known masterpieces of Aivazovsky, Ivanov and Brullov can be seen on display.

Special attention paid to exhibition of artists of late 19 th – 20 th century which represented by works of Vrubel, Serov, Rerih, Petrov-Vodkin, Malevich, Muhina.  In present the collection of Russian Museum enlarges by contemporary artists. 

Now the Museum is the owner of three more palaces in the center of St Petersburg, the Stroganov Palace, Marble Palace and St Michael’s Castle.
